Nyampinga means "beautiful women, inside and out" and the women's cooperative of this Rwandan coffee certainly represents this description.
While traveling through Rwanda in 2016 and visiting producers, cooperatives, washing stations and farms, we were amazed by the coffee and mission of the Nyampinga cooperative.
These women dance! We were greeted upon our arrival with song and dance, we all danced during the break time and then once again the members danced and sang to us as we said our goodbyes. We came away committed to the idea that all breaks should include dancing!
The members of the cooperative were very generous in sharing their stories with us and the challenges that they have overcome in establishing their farms as well as their plans for the future.
We cupped this delicious coffee with the trained cuppers of the cooperative and then shared our notes on the coffees with the cuppers as the members of the cooperative listened and added their thoughts.
The coffee has the sweet and bright acidity that we would expect from a great East African coffee. There is a hint of floral coffee blossom in the fragrance and a nice citrus, chocolate and molasses in the cup. Wonderful sweet lingering finish.
